Current Status and Path

As of Wednesday morning, Melissa’s core is located 150 miles south of the central Bahamas. The storm is moving northeast at 14 mph. After crossing eastern Cuba early Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane, it will pass near the Bahamas today and approach Bermuda late Thursday.

Authorities have issued hurricane warnings for parts of Cuba, the southeastern and central Bahamas, and Bermuda. Tropical storm warnings cover Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and additional areas in Cuba.

Devastation in the Caribbean

Melissa caused catastrophic damage across multiple nations. On Tuesday, the storm battered Jamaica with 185 mph winds, resulting in flooding, power outages, and severe infrastructure damage. Experts consider it the strongest hurricane to ever strike the island.

In Haiti, heavy rains triggered deadly flash floods, killing at least 10 people. Overflowing rivers displaced thousands, with Petit-Goave among the worst-affected areas.

Eastern Cuba suffered major destruction as Melissa made landfall. Torrential rains, storm surges, and strong winds damaged homes and infrastructure. Local authorities successfully evacuated hundreds of thousands, minimizing casualties but leaving many communities in need of aid.

Threats to the Bahamas and Bermuda

The southeastern Bahamas now face hurricane-force winds, dangerous storm surges, and up to 10 inches of rainfall. Forecasters warn that Bermuda will experience severe conditions starting late Thursday, with strong winds and heavy rain lasting through Friday.

Ongoing Relief Efforts

Governments and organizations are mobilizing relief efforts to support affected areas. In Jamaica, emergency teams are restoring power and assisting displaced residents. Cuban officials are distributing supplies and helping evacuees return home. The U.S. has sent rescue teams and critical aid to assist recovery efforts across the region.

Rainfall and Flooding Risks

Melissa’s torrential rainfall continues to threaten affected areas. Jamaica has already received up to 24 inches of rain, with some mountainous regions reporting as much as 30 inches. Eastern Cuba may see up to 25 inches, while the Bahamas face the possibility of 5-10 inches, heightening flash flood risks.

Conclusion

Although Hurricane Melissa is weakening, its destructive impact persists. Recovery efforts are in full swing, but the Bahamas and Bermuda remain in the storm’s path. Authorities urge residents in these areas to prepare for severe weather and follow official guidance to stay safe.
