CVS to Close 270 More Stores in 2025 Amid Strategic Restructuring

CVS Health is continuing its major overhaul by shutting down 270 more retail stores in 2025, part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations and respond to changing customer habits.

Company Plans to Optimize Operations and Store Footprint

In its latest annual report filed this February, CVS detailed its enterprise-wide restructuring strategy, which aims to simplify the organization and improve efficiency. These upcoming closures follow a three-year plan that has already resulted in 900 store closures between 2022 and 2024.

A spokesperson for CVS told Newsweek that the decisions were influenced by population shifts, shopping patterns, pharmacy density, healthcare access, and broader community health needs. The company emphasized that these closures are not a reaction to industry pressure but part of a long-term strategy.

Expansion Plans Remain in Place

Despite the downsizing, CVS plans to open 30 new pharmacy locations in 2025, some of which will be inside Target stores. The company stated that after all closures, 85% of Americans will still live within 10 miles of a CVS Pharmacy.

However, new legislation, such as Arkansas’ recent law restricting Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) from owning pharmacies, could impact operations in some states. CVS has warned that its 23 stores in Arkansas may be affected by this legal development.
