Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54. PEOPLE confirmed that Warner drowned while swimming during a family vacation in Costa Rica on July 21, 2025. A source close to the family described the incident as a tragic accident.

Warner’s representatives have not released an official statement. His death comes as a shock to fans and peers alike, many of whom remember him as one of the most recognizable faces in 1980s and ’90s television.

A Career That Began with TV Royalty

Warner rose to fame at just 14 years old, playing the only son of Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) on NBC’s The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992. His portrayal of Theo Huxtable earned him critical acclaim and redefined how young Black men appeared on television.

In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Warner said, “I know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of.”

While acknowledging the show’s complicated legacy due to allegations against Cosby, Warner remained proud of his role and the cultural impact of the show. “I’m still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on Black culture — and American culture,” he said.

Expanding His Talents Beyond Sitcoms

After The Cosby Show, Warner continued to build a solid acting career:

  • Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000) with Eddie Griffin
  • Reed Between the Lines (2011–2015) with Tracee Ellis Ross
  • Recurring roles on shows like Suits, Major Crimes, and The Resident
  • Most recently, he appeared in 9-1-1 and Alert: Missing Persons Unit

His performances reflected his growth as both a dramatic and comedic actor.

A Voice for Mental Health and the Black Community

In 2024, Warner co-launched a podcast called Not All Hood, aimed at normalizing mental health conversations in the Black community. He spoke openly about being vulnerable and breaking the stereotype of emotional silence among Black men.

“It’s a place where I feel safe enough to be as vulnerable as I allow myself to be,” he said. Warner co-hosted the podcast with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley, creating a platform for honest dialogue about identity, mental health, and culture.

A Private Yet Impactful Life

Warner was known for keeping his personal life out of the public eye. He is survived by a wife and daughter, whose names he never publicly disclosed.

As fans and fellow actors reflect on his life, Malcolm-Jamal Warner not only leaves behind the iconic role of Theo Huxtable but also embodies grace, talent, and quiet advocacy for emotional wellness and cultural unity.
