A Mexican Navy ship carrying over 200 people struck the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

Collision with the Brooklyn Bridge

Cuauhtémoc, the Mexican Navy vessel, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on the evening of May 17, leaving multiple people injured, including three in critical condition, according to early reports. The ship, used for naval training exercises, was sailing northbound along the East River when its tall mast struck the bridge’s underside around 8:26 p.m.

The Mexican Navy confirmed the crash via a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “During the sailing maneuver of the Cuauhtémoc sailboat in New York, a mishap occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing damage to the training ship, preventing the continuation of the training cruise for the time being,” the Navy stated.

Casualties and Emergency Response

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, at least 20 people were reported in serious or critical condition. Emergency teams are continuing search and rescue efforts, pulling injured passengers from the water. Video footage shows sections of the ship breaking apart after impact, and one photo shows individuals hanging from the damaged mast.

The New York Police Department confirmed the incident and said several individuals were being “aided.” Meanwhile, NYC Emergency Management noted the situation is still developing and details are pending confirmation.

Bridge and Vessel Status Under Review

The full extent of the damage to both the bridge and the Cuauhtémoc remains unclear. The Mexican Navy said naval and local authorities are reviewing the status of both personnel and material.
