May 2025 Brings a Flower Micromoon to the Night Sky

May’s full moon is coming, and it’s bringing a softer glow to the night sky. Known as the Flower Moon, this year’s version will also be a micromoon—appearing slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.

May 2025 Flower Moon to Appear as a Micromoon

The moon will officially reach its full phase at 12:56 p.m. ET on Monday, May 12, 2025, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Even though it peaks during the day, it will still look full to the naked eye from Sunday night (May 11) through early Tuesday (May 13). For the best viewing, step outside just after sunset and look for a clear view of the horizon.

Because the moon is at apogee, the farthest point from Earth in its orbit, it will appear about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a supermoon. That’s what classifies it as a micromoon.

The Flower Moon Reflects Spring’s Bloom

The Flower Moon gets its name from the seasonal blooms typical of May. Many full moon names come from Native American and European traditions, and this one has been credited to the Algonquin people. It celebrates nature’s rebirth during the heart of spring.

Up next in the lunar calendar is the Strawberry Moon, which will rise on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Full Moon Schedule for the Rest of 2025:

  • June 11 – Strawberry Moon
  • July 10 – Buck Moon
  • August 9 – Sturgeon Moon
  • September 7 – Harvest Moon
  • October 6 – Hunter’s Moon
  • November 5 – Beaver Moon
