Miramar High School Student Arrested for Firearm
Metal Detectors Alert School Staff to Firearm
Miramar High School had a 17-year-old student taken into custody on Monday morning, April 28, for allegedly bringing a firearm onto the campus. The student’s bag triggered newly installed metal detectors, revealing the weapon as part of Broward County Public Schools’ updated security measures.

School security officers acted quickly, confiscated the weapon, and detained the student before any incident could occur. However, officials have not disclosed the type of firearm they found.
Court Appearance and Judge’s Restrictions
On Tuesday, April 29, the student appeared in court, where a judge imposed strict restrictions. He was prohibited from accessing any firearms or ammunition and is not allowed to return to school grounds without permission from the school board.
“You shall not have any access to any weapons,” the judge said.
“Yes, ma’am,” the student replied.
“You shall not return to the incident location of Miramar High School without school board approval.”
Family Reacts After Hearing
Outside the courthouse, the teen’s mother spoke briefly with reporters. She described her son as a “very good kid” but admitted she did not know how he got the gun.
“Whose gun was it?” a reporter asked.
“I don’t know,” she responded.
Detention and Pending Charges
Prosecutors are considering whether to charge the student as an adult. In the meantime, they will hold him at the Miramar Juvenile Detention Center for 21 days. That decision is expected in the coming weeks.
This case arrives amid growing discussions about school safety and gun violence prevention in Florida schools. Broward County has recently increased investments in security infrastructure, including metal detection systems and campus response training.
