Northern Lights Forecasted Over 23 U.S. States Tonight Due to Geomagnetic Storm
The northern lights may grace the skies over 23 U.S. states tonight, thanks to a powerful geomagnetic storm triggered by a recent solar event.

Solar Storm Sparks Rare Aurora Opportunity
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed that a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth’s magnetic field early on June 1, creating ideal conditions for auroras.
As a result, G1 to G4 storm levels are possible, increasing the chances of auroras appearing farther south than usual.
The Kp index, a scale that measures geomagnetic activity, is forecasted to reach 7.67, indicating high auroral potential. The strongest displays are expected between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., when skies are darkest.
Best Viewing Conditions and Tips
If you’re located in a state on the list below, your chances of seeing auroras are higher than usual. To improve your view:
- Find a dark location, far from city lights.
- Look northward with a clear horizon.
- Avoid light pollution and check local weather forecasts for clear skies.
- Use an aurora tracking app like My Aurora Forecast or Space Weather Live for real-time alerts.
23 States with Aurora Potential Tonight
Here are the states where auroras may be visible, listed from most likely to least likely based on NOAA’s forecast:
- Alaska
- Montana
- North Dakota
- Minnesota
- Wisconsin
- Michigan
- South Dakota
- Vermont
- New Hampshire
- Maine
- Idaho
- Washington
- Oregon
- New York
- Massachusetts
- Connecticut
- Rhode Island
- Nebraska
- Iowa
- Wyoming
- Illinois
- India
- Pennsylvania
These locations fall either fully or partially within NOAA’s aurora visibility zone.
A Rare Treat for Sky Watchers
Auroras are notoriously unpredictable. Some nights they shine brightly across unexpected regions. Other times, conditions fall short. Still, with current geomagnetic storm activity, tonight offers one of the best chances this year for a dazzling light show, especially for those living outside the usual aurora belt.
