Mount Etna Eruption Sends Massive Ash Cloud Over Sicily
Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, delivered another jaw-dropping spectacle this week as it erupted on June 3, 2025. It spewed a towering 6.5-kilometre plume of ash, gas, and rock above Sicily.

Despite the dramatic visuals, officials reassured the public there’s no immediate danger to surrounding communities.
Crater Collapse Sparks Spectacle
According to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the eruption began when part of Etna’s southeast crater collapsed, triggering lava flows and a massive ash cloud. It marked the 14th eruptive phase in recent months.
Though tremors were felt in nearby towns, the flow remains confined within Etna’s summit area. The zone has been closed to tourists as a precaution.
Tourists Capture Eruption as Red Alert Issued
While tourists were spotted capturing photos and rushing downhill during the event, officials urged caution. Salvo Cocina, head of the regional civil protection unit, advised avoiding the summit “in consideration of the potential evolution of the phenomenon.”
Italy’s civil aviation authorities issued a red alert, citing the volcanic cloud’s height at over 6.5 kilometers, but Catania Airport remained operational with no major flight disruptions.
No Risk to Populated Areas, Officials Say
Sicily’s regional president Renato Schifani said experts confirmed the lava remained within the natural boundary known as the Valley of the Lions, a common tourist area. He emphasized there’s “no danger for the population.”
Rescue teams continue to monitor the site closely as experts remain on high alert for any sudden changes in volcanic activity.
