Bella Ramsey Addresses Criticism Ahead of ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 “I Wanted to Feel Her Heaviness”
With The Last of Us Season 2 set to premiere on Sunday, April 13, fans are eager to see how the story will evolve — and how Bella Ramsey will portray a more grown-up Ellie. But not all buzz has been positive.

As in the video game, Season 2 jumps five years ahead. Ellie is now 19, older, stronger, and emotionally heavier. Some fans have raised concerns about Ramsey’s physical appearance and whether they can convincingly portray this version of Ellie. Ramsey, now 21, didn’t undergo a dramatic transformation for the role and remains 5’1”, sparking online criticism.
Craig Mazin Defends Ramsey: “I’m Interested in Emotional Maturity”
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Craig Mazin addressed the backlash. He acknowledged that Ellie looks older and more muscular in the game, but says that’s not what matters most.
“Ellie in the game looks much older. Some people change dramatically and some don’t,” Mazin said.
“I’m interested in the emotional maturity, and the change in personality. Bella has certainly grown.”
Realism Over Aesthetic How a Smaller Ellie Fights Back
Mazin also took a practical approach to the size difference. Instead of ignoring Ramsey’s height, the show leaned into it.
“How does a small person fight a big person? It’s not karate or cool punches. They’d lose,” he said.
“The answer is jiu-jitsu.”
He explained that in this harsh, post-apocalyptic world, survival means being smart — not flashy.
Casting Dina to Match Ramsey’s Energy and Size
Mazin revealed that casting Dina, Ellie’s love interest, also required balance. They chose Isabela Merced, who is about the same height as Ramsey, to maintain realism and emotional chemistry.
“We wanted someone who radiates sun,” Mazin said.
“We also didn’t want someone 5’9″ who’d tower over Bella. That would feel like a mom, not a partner.”
Bella Ramsey on Playing an Older, Hardened Ellie
In a recent panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV, Ramsey joined Mazin and co-creator Neil Druckmann to discuss the upcoming season. They opened up about portraying a more emotionally complex Ellie.
“In Season 2, I wanted to feel her heaviness a bit more,” Ramsey said.
“She’s a little harder. Some things are the same, but she’s changed.”
Ramsey acknowledged that the weight of what Ellie has experienced should be visible in both action and attitude. The character is no longer a teen figuring things out — she’s a survivor carrying deep emotional scars.
Season 2 Brings a New Cast and Bigger Stakes
Alongside Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, Season 2 introduces new faces like Isabela Merced, Kaitlyn Dever, Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Wright, Danny Ramirez, Young Mazino, and Joe Pantoliano.
Despite the online debates, the creative team stands firm in their choices. Ramsey might not mirror game-Ellie’s exact look but according to Mazin, they embody her soul.
