A Personal Health Update

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane confirmed to People. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” He emphasized that despite the diagnosis, he is still able to work and remains committed to his acting career.

The actor is set to return to the set of Euphoria on April 14 to begin filming Season 3 of the HBO series. Dane plays Cal Jacobs, the complex and controversial father of Nate Jacobs, portrayed by Jacob Elordi.

ALS: Understanding the Diagnosis

ALS is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, loss of motor function, and eventually paralysis. It currently has no known cure, and symptoms typically worsen over time, impacting speech, movement, and the ability to breathe.

Despite the challenges ahead, Dane expressed hope and gratitude.

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set… I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Career Highlights and What’s Ahead

Known to many as McSteamy on Grey’s Anatomy, Dane has had a storied career in television. Beyond his fan-favorite role as Dr. Mark Sloan, he led TNT’s post-apocalyptic series The Last Ship and has played a variety of dramatic and villainous roles over the years.

On Euphoria, his portrayal of Cal Jacobs has drawn both praise and controversy. After Season 2 aired, Dane hinted at a redemption arc for his character in future episodes, telling Variety,

“Eventually there was going to be a moment of truth and some sort of redemption for him.”

Production on Euphoria Season 3 officially began in January 2025, with Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi confirmed to return alongside Dane.
