Harry Potter Series on HBO Casts New Leads: Meet the Next Harry, Hermione, and Ron
The magic is officially returning—this time to television. HBO has cast the lead trio for its upcoming Harry Potter series, naming Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

After a global casting call that drew more than 30,000 auditions, the new faces of the wizarding world are set to begin filming this summer.
Meet the New Generation of Hogwarts Students
Dominic McLaughlin, who plays Harry, appeared in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow. Arabella Stanton starred as Matilda in the West End from 2023 to 2024. Meanwhile, Alastair Stout, cast as Ron, will make his major acting debut with this series.
The casting team, led by Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, concluded a months-long search with praise from showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod:
“The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold… We cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”
A-List Cast Joins the Wizarding World
Joining the trio is a star-studded ensemble:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
- Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell
- Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
This new take on J.K. Rowling’s globally beloved saga promises a faithful, long-form adaptation of the original seven-book series.
Behind the Scenes: A Familiar Team With a New Vision
The series is helmed by Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials), who serves as showrunner and writer. Likewise, Mark Mylod, known for his Emmy-winning work on Succession, will direct several episodes. The project is produced in collaboration with Brontë Film and TV, Warner Bros. Television, and Heyday Films, with J.K. Rowling, David Heyman, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts attached as executive producers.
Despite ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling’s views, HBO executives say the show’s focus remains squarely on the source material. Chief content officer Casey Bloys stated, “Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything… Those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them.”
A Major Step Toward a New Era of Wizarding Storytelling
The original film series made global stars of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. With McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout stepping into these iconic roles, HBO’s Harry Potter series positions itself to define a new generation of fans.
Filming begins this summer, and the team will announce release details later. Until then, fans can only imagine what’s brewing behind the scenes.
