Miami International Airport Delays After Severe Weather Hits
Heavy storms hit Miami-Dade County on Monday, causing chaos for travelers at Miami International Airport (MIA) and across the region. Strong winds and intense rainfall led to temporary flight delays, cancellations, and localized flooding—but despite viral claims, the airport did not close entirely.

FAA Issues Temporary Ground Delay
From 4:30 to 5:20 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily paused flights at both MIA and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. This short-lived halt was due to intense weather systems moving through South Florida, bringing heavy rainfall and lightning.
During the storm, streets flooded quickly, traffic stalled, and downed trees were reported in several neighborhoods.
Widespread Flooding Across Miami-Dade
The National Weather Service recorded 2 to 3 inches of rain in parts of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Neighborhoods like Hialeah, North Miami, Aventura, Opa-locka, and Biscayne Park experienced road flooding and power outages. A flash flood warning remained in effect for northern Miami-Dade during the evening commute.
In Downtown Miami, parts of Biscayne Boulevard were submerged, forcing drivers to detour. Christina Duenas, a local resident, shared her frustration, saying, “The water gets up even higher, like halfway into our front yard.”
Trees Down, Flights Delayed, But Airport Remains Open
One Miami resident, Gonzalo Gonzalez, reported a large tree falling in a local park where children usually play. “We would have had multiple fatalities,” he said, adding that the tree had been struck by lightning before but never inspected.
Although weather disrupted operations, Miami International Airport stayed open. No full ground stop was issued, contrary to some social media posts. Airport officials confirmed ongoing flight activity with delays and reroutes due to safety measures.
What’s Ahead
Meteorologists warn that more heavy rain is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Travelers flying in or out of MIA should check their flight status and allow extra time.
