Tropical Storm Alvin Forms in Eastern Pacific | Hurricane Forecast

· ·

The first tropical storm of 2025 in the Western Hemisphere is now forming off the southwestern coast of Mexico, and it could soon become Hurricane Alvin. Although it’s still far offshore, forecasters are watching closely to see if it poses any threat to Mexico later this week.

Where Alvin Is Now

As of today, the storm system sits several hundred miles south of Acapulco, Mexico. Satellite images show strong thunderstorm activity near its center, especially to the north and east, signaling steady development. The storm is currently drifting west-northwestward, but models suggest a gradual northward turn may occur soon.

Forecast: Hurricane Possible by Thursday

Most computer models predict that Alvin could gain strength over the next couple of days. If it builds a strong central core of thunderstorms, it may reach hurricane status as early as Thursday.

However, conditions aren’t fully in Alvin’s favor. By the weekend, it will likely enter a zone with strong wind shear, cooler ocean water, and drier air—factors that typically weaken tropical systems.

There’s still uncertainty about the storm’s exact path. It may weaken over open waters, or it could curve northeast toward the Mexican coast in a diminished state around Saturday.

What Coastal Areas Should Expect

Even if Alvin remains offshore, it will likely generate high surf and strong rip currents along Mexico’s Pacific coast, especially west of Acapulco. Coastal areas north and east of the storm’s path could also see heavy rainfall, raising the risk of flash flooding and mudslides.

Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season Is Now Underway

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season officially began on May 15, two weeks before the Atlantic season. This region often sees storms drift westward into the Pacific, but landfalls do happen. In 2023, Hurricane Hilary’s remnants brought rain to the U.S. Southwest, while Hurricane Otis, a Category 5, made a devastating landfall in Acapulco.

Tropical Storm Alvin marks a notable start to the 2025 season, and meteorologists are monitoring it closely for potential changes.
