Delta Flight Forced to Turn Back After Mid-Flight Ceiling Collapse
Passengers on Delta Flight 2417 had a terrifying experience on April 14, 2025, when a ceiling panel collapsed mid-flight between Atlanta and Chicago. Travelers were forced to hold the ceiling up with their hands for nearly 45 minutes before a temporary fix using tape.

Incident Occurred Shortly After Takeoff
Passenger Tom Witschy, seated in 19B, described hearing a banging noise just after takeoff. Moments later, a section of the plane’s ceiling detached, narrowly missing a woman seated ahead of him.
Passengers quickly grabbed the falling panel to prevent it from swinging and causing injuries as the plane continued its ascetap.
Flight Crew and Passengers Work Together to Secure Panel
Because of the initial climb, flight attendants were seated and unable to assist immediately. Witschy and two nearby passengers held the panel manually for 10 to 15 minutes before flight attendants could reach them.
- Flight attendants alerted pilots about the issue.
- Passengers continued holding the panel for an additional 30 minutes.
A fellow traveler, described as an engineer, inspected the damage and discovered a missing screw or bolt. With no quick solution available, a passenger provided bright yellow tape, and the group taped the ceiling panel in place during the Delta flight.
Flight Turns Back to Atlanta
Though the plane was closer to Chicago Midway, pilots made the decision to return to Atlanta for safety reasons. The entire ordeal turned what was supposed to be a short flight into a full-day delay.
Delta later transferred passengers to another aircraft with about a two-hour delay.
Delta’s Response and Passenger Compensation
Delta offered 10,000 SkyMiles to affected passengers for their cooperation and patience. In a statement, Delta said:
“Delta thanks our customers for their patience and cooperation. We apologize for the delay in their travels.”
Passenger Tom Witschy noted that while flight attendants were kind and apologetic, he has filed a refund request to recover lost wages from the missed day of work.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 717.
