Overturned semitruck traffic came to a standstill on I-435 southbound just past Raytown Road after strong winds from severe weather caused the vehicle to flip. Shortly before 2:30 p.m., the truck toppled on its side and reduced the highway to one lane. Emergency vehicles quickly responded, and traffic backed up around the scene.

Severe Weather Brings Flood and Tornado Risks to Kansas City Area

Tuesday afternoon saw a rapidly changing severe weather system moving through Kansas City, Missouri. A line of storms has brought heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving between 0.5 to 2.5 inches, and some expecting up to 3 inches. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning lasting through Tuesday evening.

While the flood risk is increasing, there is also concern for damaging straight-line winds and possible brief tornadoes. Tornado watches remain active for several counties in Missouri, including Johnson, Macon, and Sullivan, among others.

Reports have already confirmed flooding along Indian Creek, raising concerns over street flooding and rising water levels in streams and rivers in the coming days.

Live Weather Updates and Incident Reports

  • 4:21 p.m. – Some counties were removed from the Tornado Watch, but many remain under alert due to ongoing risks.
  • 3:50 p.m. – Flooding reported along Indian Creek is becoming the main threat as tornado risk decreases.
  • 3:32 p.m. – A KC Fire Department ambulance was towed after going off-road while avoiding a falling tree in Raytown.

Multiple rounds of thunderstorms throughout the day may cause damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding. The most favorable time for any brief tornado activity is late afternoon to early evening, especially in communities south of Butler, Clinton, and Sedalia.

Residents should stay alert to weather warnings and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy storms.
